Jacqueline de Romilly

Jacqueline de Romilly Worms ( born March 26, 1913 in Chartres, † December 18, 2010 in Paris), born Jacqueline David, was a French philologist and member of the Académie française. She is known for her work on the ancient Greek culture and language, especially to Thucydides.

Life

Jacqueline David was born into a family of French Jewish educated bourgeoisie. She was the daughter of Maxime David, a French professor of philosophy, and of Jeanne Malvoisin ( as a writer: Jeanne Maxime - David). Her father was killed in World War II. Jacqueline David was at the Lycée Molière to school in Paris. In 1930 she won an honorable mention ( laureate ) in Latin and the second prize in Greek in the national concours général of the French schools. After the two-year preparatory literarwissenschaftlichen classes ( classes préparatoires littéraires ) at the Lycée Louis -le- Grand, she was admitted in 1933 to study at the École Normale Supérieure on the rue d' Ulm in Paris. As a student of Paul Mazon she obtained in 1936 Agrégation for classical literature ( Lettres Classiques ).

In 1940, she married Michel Worms de Romilly, of which she divorced in 1973. In 1947, she holds a doctorate in the literature.

After several years of teaching at the high school in 1949, she was appointed to a professorship at the University of Lille. In 1957 an appointment as professor at the Sorbonne. 1973 he was appointed to the chair of Greek moral philosophy and politics ( formation de la pensée morale et politique ) at the Collège de France. She became the first female professor at that institution. In 1975 she was appointed as the successor of Pierre Chantraine to the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres; Also at this facility, she was the first female member. In 1987, she was elected its president. In 1988 she was appointed as his second wife, Marguerite Yourcenar, the Académie française.

In 1995 she received Greek citizenship; In 2000 she was appointed as Ambassador of Hellenism ( ambassadrice de l' hellénisme ). In 2008, she converted to Catholicism.

She was chairman and honorary chairman of the humanist Guillaume Budé Association. In addition, she was a corresponding member of many foreign scientific societies and academies, including the Academy of Athens, the British Academy, the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, the Danish Academy of Sciences, the Netherlands Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and many others.
