Jacques Chessex

Jacques Chessex ( born March 1, 1934 in Payerne, Vaud Canton; † 9 October, 2009 Yverdon- les- Bains, Vaud Canton ) was a French-speaking writers from Switzerland.

Life

His father Pierre was director of a Chessex Progymnasium. Jacques Chessex attended schools in Payerne, Lausanne and Fribourg, studied humanities in Lausanne and was then as a French teacher at the local Gymnase de la Cité active. For the novel L' Ogre, whose title refers to the Kindlifresserbrunnen in Bern, he received in 1973 as the first non- Frenchman ( and so far only Swiss ) the Prix Goncourt. His estate is located in the Swiss Literary Archives in Bern.

Chessex died during a panel discussion on one of his works.

A great stir, particularly in Switzerland, excited the last work of Chessex, the novel was published in 2009 "Un Juif pour l' exemple ". Jacques Chessex told in this novel the historically authentic story of Arthur Bloch, a Jewish cattle dealer from Bern, who was murdered on April 16, 1942 in Payerne from Frontists.
