Jacques de Guyse

Jacques de Guyse (Latin Iacobus de Guisia ) (* 1334 in Mons, † 1399 in Valenciennes ) was a Franciscan monk and historian of the late 14th century.

Life and work

After completing his studies in Paris, where he graduated with a doctorate in theology, he returned to the Namur. While his brother John briefly as an adviser to Count William III. of Hainault acted, Jacques retired to the convent of Valenciennes, where he began his annals.

His main work is the wide range Annales Historiae Illustrium principum Hannoniae, in which he represents the history of the county of Hainaut its mythological beginnings to about the year 1254.

During his chronicle initially found no particular distribution, it has been transferred half a century later by Jean Wauquelin from Latin into French, and found means rich illuminated a larger distribution.
