Jacques Stella

Jacques Stella ( * 1596 in Lyon, † April 29, 1657 in Paris) was a Franco- Flemish painter, engraver and wood carver of the Baroque. Also known as Jacques Stalard, Jacques Stallard, Jacques Star, C. Stella, Jacques Stellaert and Jacques de Stella.

Life

Jacques Stella was the son of the Flemish painter François Stella (1563-1605), who mainly painted paintings for churches and monasteries. Jacques began in 1616 alongside Jacques Callot, who influenced the style of his engravings to work for Cosimo II de ' Medici in Florence. He embodied the sensitive Baroque style in France and Italy in the early 17th century. In 1623 he went to Rome in order to strengthen its reputation and its prestige. His work has been greatly influenced by the classic approach of Nicolas Poussin, who is considered a close confidant Stellas. 1634 Stella stayed in Venice, Milan and Lyon, before he returned to Paris. There he was Cardinal Richelieu to King Louis XIII. presented, which him his " first Royal painter "appointed. He remained in France and continued to work in Paris, Rouen and Versailles. After a long illness Stella died in 1657 in Paris.

After Stella's death, his paintings were often sold as works by Poussin. Many of his works are damaged or not explored. His nephew Antoine Bouzonnet (1637-1682) and his nieces Antoinette, Claudine (1634-1697) and Françoise Bouzonnet he made himself out. Claudine Stella Bouzonnet presented after his death stitches forth from his drawings.
