Charatakteristisch for his technique is the use of finger picks on the thumb and two fingers of the right hand. His playing is clear, precise and dynamic, it changes frequently between plucked and struck passages. Typical are swinging bass lines and rich chords with which Stotzem often composed onomatopoeic. Also percussive elements are found in some of his plays, in which he created rhythmic elements on guitar body and strings. His compositional approach is based on a melody line which he surrounds with a harmonic structure. His pieces are generally in standard tuning, open tunings he used only rarely.
