Jaime Hurtado

Jaime Ricaurte Hurtado González ( born February 7, 1937 in Malimpia, Canton Quinindé, Esmeraldas Province, † February 17, 1999 in Quito murdered ) was an Afro- Ecuadorian politician of the Movimiento Popular Democrático.

He studied law at the University of Guayaquil, where he was a member of the Federación de Estudiantes Universitarios del Ecuador. In 1966 he joined the Partido Comunista del Ecuador Marxista Leninista, where he held high positions. In 1978 he was a founder of the Movimiento Popular Democrático which he represented from 1979 as the first black and again from 1998 in Congress. In 1984, he was the first black presidential candidate and received the fourth most votes. 1990 to 1994 he was Director of the National MPD. Since 1998 he was again a member of parliament. He was shot shortly after leaving the parliament building with his spare deputies and a fraction staff in 1999.
