Jake Madden

John Madden 1892

John ' Jake' William Madden ( born June 11, 1865 in Dumbarton, † April 17, 1948 in Prague) was a Scottish football player and coach. From 1905 to 1930 he coached Slavia Prague.

Playing career

Born in Scotland Dumbarton, Madden played for the local club Albion and Hibernian. In 1886 he joined the FC Dumbarton. However Shortly thereafter, he played for the North English club Gainsborough Trinity.

Celtic invited Madden for the first game of the association on 28 May in 1888, after a Glasgow. Although the striker in a 5-2 against Glasgow Rangers managed a goal, nevertheless, Celtic, 1889, Johnny Madden decided to undertake. For the Hoops Madden scored 38 goals in 92 league games in 26 cup games hit the attacker 11 times. For the Scottish national Madden ran twice. His debut was the center forward on March 18, 1893 at 8:0 of the Scots against Wales in Wrexham. Madden scored four goals. Madden remained Celtic, despite an offer from Sheffield Wednesday in 1892 to the 1896/97 season faithful. He then briefly played for Dundee FC and joined in December 1897 Tottenham Hotspur on. In London, he finished his playing career at the age of almost 33 years.

Coaching career

As Celtic toured in the spring of 1904 through Central Europe and on May 25, met in Bohemia on Slavia Prague, was also John Madden part of the tour group. Slavia's officials were able to win as a coach for the team Madden from February 1905. Madden led in Prague a revolutionary training methods, also he was also an excellent medical professional.

Madden Slavia won several titles. In the years 1908, 1910, 1911 and 1912 the team won the so-called Charity Cup, the then major cup competition in Bohemia. In the years 1913 and 1915 Slavia won the championship of the Czech Football Association CSF. Before the start of an official national championship Slavia won in 1918 and 1924 in the so-called Středočeská župa, the most competitive of Czechoslovakia. In the seasons 1924/25 and 1928/29, the Red -Whites won Madden under the Czechoslovak championship. A total of four times, the team also won the then most important cup competition Středočeský pohár, namely 1922, 1926, 1927, 1928.

Even after his retirement in 1930 Madden Slavia remained loyal and worked in the background. In 1938, the Scot was pleased about winning the Mitropacups.

Private life

John Madden was one of nine children of Irish immigrants Edward Madden and Agnes McIlvain, who lived in the High Street 71 in Dumbarton. He was baptized in the Church of St. Patrick, and attended the same school present. After his education he worked as a riveter in a shipyard on the River Clyde.

During his visit to Prague in the spring of 1904 he met his future wife Františka Čechová know. The two had a son together named Jindřich, who died before the death of the parents. John Madden is buried in the cemetery Olšanský hřbitov next to his son and his wife, who died in 1963.
