Jakobsberg Priory

The Priory Jakob mountain is a monastery of the Benedictine Mission at the Jacob Hill near Ockenheim in Rheinhessen.

History

The monastery grew out of a 1720 -founded pilgrimage in honor of the fourteen Holy Helpers. First, there was only a small chapel with Hermitage. 1859, this first chapel was demolished and until 1862 built the new, still existing chapel, which was consecrated by Bishop Wilhelm Emmanuel von Ketteler. By the brothers courage from Worms, the interior 1864-1869 was painted romantic - religious with Nazarene images. The subsequent House, the later " House St. Christoph", was built a little later.

Due to the enormous popularity of the pilgrimage in the 19th century came up with the idea to entrust with the care of a monastic community at this. The first monks, then Trappists, but attracted only 1921. Between 1922 and 1929 were in the chancel and the side altars of the chapel changes, such as the installation of a choir stalls made ​​. Impairments of monastic life to resolution had the monks from Jakob Berg during the time of National Socialism accept. After the General Administration of the Trappists had ordered the dissolution of the community under pressure in 1930, this was reacted with some time delay, in 1949.

Between 1951 and 1960 the monastery novitiate of East Province of the Jesuit order was placed.

With the unrest in Africa of the 1960s, many religious working in the mission were forced to recall their confreres in the crisis regions in order to forestall an expulsion. Therefore, acquired at the end of this decade the Missionary Benedictines of St. Ottilia the buildings on the Jacob Berg. The first group of monks moved in on 31 January 1961.

The chancel arch in 1972 dressed with colored ceramic reliefs of the 14 helpers. This choir arch separates the choir from the nave. A 4.5 m high Pantocrator mosaic of glass artist Peter Paul Etz, then a lecturer at the State Art School in Mainz, and Gustel stone (Mainz) was 1952/53, designed and executed in the apse.

1983 and 1990 new buildings have been: monastery, education center and youth center built and renovated. These serve as an educational institution since then and cultural center of the diocese of Mainz and the Benedictine monastery on the mountain Jacob. In February 2009 a six-month renovation phase was completed again. The altar of 1.2 tonnes of heavy red sandstone as the focal point moved more to the interior of the church, ambo and tabernacle today form an axis in the choir room.
