Jakub Åšwinka

Jakub Świnka († March 4, 1314 ) was a Polish priest of the Roman Catholic Church and from 1283 Archbishop of Gniezno.

Life

The exact origin Jakub Świnkas nothing more is known, the names of his parents are not known. He and his brothers Sulek and Jan belonged to a knight family crest stem from Świnka ( German pig ), hence its name. After 12 years Sedisvakanz the Archbishop's chair Jakub Świnka was ordained by papal nomination on December 19, 1283 Archbishop of Gniezno. He convened several synods to restore discipline in the archdiocese of a (1285, 1290, 1298, 1306, 1309), urged the influence of foreign (especially German ) Clerics back and promoted the occupation of church offices with Poland. Active he intervened in feuds of the Polish duchies and bishops supported Thomas II, Bishop of Breslau, and turned in the Cracow uprising against the bailiff Albert Johann Muskata, the Bishop of Krakow. He crowned 1295 Duke Przemysław II of Great Poland and Pomerellen to the king of Poland and after his death, 1300, Wenceslaus II of Bohemia. Then he supported Duke Władysław I the Elbow- of Cujavia in the suppression of the Bohemian rule in Poland ( 1300-1305/1306 ).
