James Alexander Porterfield Rynd

James Alexander Porterfield Rynd ( born April 6, 1846 † 17 March 1917 in Dublin) was an Irish chess player.

Porterfield Rynd, although an amateur, won in 1865 the first Irish Chess Championship with 16 out of 17 points. He was from 1870 to 1883 clerk of a chess column in the Irish Sportsman and Farmer. In February 1889 he gave his farewell to the chess known, but this lasted only a few months. Porterfield Rynd was for decades considered the strongest player in Ireland.

He later worked politically in the Irish Unionist Alliance.
