James Carlisle

Sir James Beethoven Carlisle GCMG (* August 5, 1937 in Bolans (Antigua ) ) is an Antiguan politician and former Governor-General of Antigua and Barbuda.

Biography

Study and career

After education at Bolans Public School he graduated in the UK initially a general education course at Northampton College of Technology. Later he studied dentistry at the University of Dundee, which he finished with a bachelor's degree. Between 1961 and 1966 he was also a soldier of the British Royal Air Force.

After working as a dentist in the UK, he returned in 1981 to Antigua, where he settled as the fourth dentist on the island. In addition to his private practice, he also served as a dentist in the health service of the country. While working as a dentist, he founded with the help of Prime Minister Vere Cornwall Bird, one of his patients, a fluoride program for the prevention of dental caries in children as well as an institute for free dentistry. In addition, he was active as a member of the International Society of Laser Dentists and the British Association of Dental Medicine. In addition, he graduated in 1991 Postgraduate studies at the American School of Laser Dentistry from. Between 1983 and 1993 he also worked as a dental officer in the armed forces ( Royal Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force ).

Political career and climb to the Governor General

On June 10, 1993, he was nominated as successor to Sir Wilfred E. Jacobs by Prime Minister Bird for the first indigenous Governor-General of Antigua and Barbuda and appointed Queen Elizabeth II as head of state to their representatives.
