James Chance and the Contortions

James Chance and the Contortions was an American No Wave band of the free-jazz saxophonist James Sigfried (also: James White, James Chance ) was founded in 1977, who had previously played with Teenage Jesus and the Jerks. After the release of their only album Buy the Contortions in 1979, the band finally broke up the following year.

History

James Sigfried, who came in the 1970s from Milwaukee to New York to play there free jazz was soon a member of the avant-garde scene. He took the stage name of James Chance and founded after leaving Teenage Jesus and the Jerks kept by him The Contortions ( engl. the distortion ). Because of their wild performances Brian Eno was aware of the quintet, who asked her to take four pieces for the No Wave compilation No New York. Soon they had recorded enough material for an album, which was released in 1979 under the title " Buy the Contortions ". James Sigfried founded at the same time, the band James White and the Blacks, who, with the exception of Adele Bertei, of the members of the Contortions and was still 1979, the oriented disco music album " Off White " published.

With the decline of the No Wave scene in the early 1980s, the Contortions disbanded, but its members were active continue musically.
