James Cohn

James Cohn ( born February 12, 1928 in Newark / New Jersey) is an American composer.

Cohn had in his hometown violin and piano lessons, was a student of Roy Harris, Wayne Barlow and Bernard Wagenaar and studied composition with completion in 1950 at the Juilliard School. He composed solo and orchestral works, choral works and chamber music, including the opera The Fall of the City, eight symphonies, five piano sonatas and string quartets, moreover, commissioned works for film and television.

For his Second Symphony, which was premiered in Brussels, he was awarded the Queen Elisabeth of Belgium. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra under Paul Paray gave the first performance of his Third Symphony and the Variations on The Wayfaring Stranger. He has received commissions, inter alia, by clarinetist Jon Manasse and Christopher Jepperson, trumpeter Jeffrey Silver shock, the Belgian Clarinet Ensemble Claribel and The McKim Fund of the Library of Congress. More recently, Cohn wrote a piano concerto for the Argentine pianist Mirian Conti, 3 Dances for clarinet and guitar for Raphael Sanders and David Galvez as well as a duo for Clarinet & Violin for Julianne Kirk and Adda Kridler.
