James Fei

James Cheng Ting Fei ( pinyin: Fei Zhengting; born 1974 in Taipei, Taiwan ) is a Taiwanese -derived, American saxophonist and composer of contemporary music, electronic music and free improvisation music. He plays soprano, alto and baritone saxophone and bass clarinet.

Biography

James Fei came in 1992 for the study of Electrical Engineering in the United States and worked next as a musician. Since 1998, he has been involved in several projects of Anthony Braxton (Four Compositions, 1998 and Composition, No. 247, 2000. ) And performed with him at the North Sea Jazz Festival; He also worked with composer Alvin Lucier. In 1998 he played in the ensemble of Chris Jonas with Cuong Vu, Kevin Norton and Joe Fiedler ( ensembles Unsynchroniszed ) .. Since the 1990s, Fei took some solo albums on the label Leo Records, CRI, Organized Sound and Improvised Music ( Japan) on. With the album Bode Sound Project, he created a tribute to an early pioneer of electronic music, Harald Bode. Other compositions by Fei were of the Bang on a Can All-Stars, the Orchestra of the SEM Ensemble and the North Holland Philharmonic listed. In addition to his compositions for classical music as well as for electro-acoustic ensembles Fei created sound installations and occurs as an improviser solo and in small groups, as in James Fei - Charity Chan - Damon Smith trio improvisation, but also with Chris Cutler, Anthony Coleman, Christian Wolff, John Butcher, Jaap Blonk and Okkyung Lee.

Fei lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. Since 2006 he is an assistant professor at Mills College in California, where he teaches electronic arts.
