Anthony Coleman

Anthony Coleman ( born August 30, 1955 in Brooklyn, New York) is an American jazz and improvisational musicians (piano, keyboards, trumpet, vocals, composition).

Life and work

Coleman took lessons with Jaki Byard and studied composition at the New England Conservatory of Music and the Yale School of Music. He also participated in a seminar Mauricio Kagel in Acanthes in Aix -en- Provence. Then he returned to New York City, where he was known by his playing with John Zorn. He was involved in the recording of albums Wrath Cobra, Kristallnacht, The Big Gundown, Bar Kochba and Spillane. He also worked with Elliott Sharp, David Moss, Dave Douglas, Guy Klucevsek, Marc Ribot (Los Cubanos Postizos ), David Krakauer, Shelley Hirsch, Greg Cohen, Joey Baron and other musicians from the downtown scene, it is connected to this day. Together with Roy Nathanson, he ran several projects and published albums such as Lobster and Friend, where avant-garde jazz was associated with Jewish entertainment. On the RuhrTriennale 2005 he presented Sanda Weigl ago with Gypsy In A Tree.

His own bands Sephardic Tinge and The Selfhaters, with whom he toured Europe and recorded several albums, reflect his interest in Jewish culture. On With Every Breath he became the first jazz musician on a Sabbath celebration in a New York synagogue, were involved in the rabbis and cantors in addition to numerous members of the Downtown- circle. In 2006, he interpreted to Shmutsige magnate songs of the Yiddish composer and Holocaust victim Mordechai Gebirtig.

Coleman gave the downtown scene with particular momentum as a composer. Especially characteristic is the " balance of extreme sound design and a delicate romantic melody consciousness" (W. Kampmann ). He composed for Bang on a Can, for the harpist Carol Emanuel and Klucevsec. In spring 2003 he taught at Bennington College in Vermont. 2004 was Coleman in the center of the three-day festival Abstract Adventures in Brussels .. Since 2005 he has worked at the New England Conservatory.

Anthony Coleman is married to the artist Ljiljana Randjic.
