James H. Torrens

James H. Torrens ( born September 12, 1874 in New York City; † April 5, 1952 ) was an American politician. Between 1944 and 1947 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

James H. Torrens attended grammar school and high school in New York City. He was vice president and treasurer of a manufacturing company for cigars. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party. Between 1933 and 1947 he was the first democratic leader in the 23rd Assembly District and later in the 15th Assembly District. Torrens was elected in a by-election in the 21st electoral district of New York in the 78th Congress, there to fill the vacancy that was created by the resignation of Joseph A. Gavagan. He took on 29 February 1944, his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. In the congressional elections of 1944, he was re- elected to the 79th Congress. Since he gave up for reelection in 1946, he retired after March 3, 1947 from the Congress. He died on April 5, 1952 in New York City and was buried at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Mount Pleasant.
