James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Arran

James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Arran (* 1475, † 1529 in Kinneil House) was a Scottish nobleman.

James was a son of James Hamilton, 1st Lord Hamilton, and his second wife, the Scottish Princess Mary. He played a prominent part in the IV disputes over the regency after the death of Jacob. In 1520 he was, 6th Earl of Angus, sold by the Douglas under the leadership of Archibald Douglas, after a violent street fight from Edinburgh.

After the death of the regent, John Stewart, 2nd Duke of Albany, in 1524, he allied himself with Queen Margaret, to govern on behalf of the twelve- year-old James V, but soon became reconciled with Angus and had to escape Jacob V. share in the government.

The Earl married in 1490 first Elizabeth, daughter of Alexander Home, 2nd Lord Home. This marriage but had to be divorced in 1504, as the first husband of Elizabeth believed dead reappeared. His second wife Arran then married Janet Bethune. With her he had the following children:

  • Helen, ∞ Archibald Campbell, 4th Earl of Argyll
  • James, 2nd Earl of Arran

From his connection with Beatrix, daughter of John Drummond, 1st Lord Drummond, he had two more children:

  • Margaret, ∞ Andrew Stewart, 1st Lord Stewart of Ochiltree
