James Hardiman

James Hardiman (also known as Séamus Ó hArgadáin ) (* 1782, † 1855) was an Irish writer and librarian.

Hardi man was born in the west of Ireland, about the year 1782. His father had a small estate in County Mayo. He was a lawyer by training and has held a place in Dublin Castle. He was also an active member of the Royal Irish Academy and collected numerous examples of traditional Irish music. In 1855 he became librarian of the recently founded Queen's College, Galway. In his honor, the local library is named.

Hardiman is best known for his History of the City and County of Galway (1820 ) and the Irish Minstrelsy (1831 ), one of the first publications of Irish poetry and songs.
