James Henry Beard

James Henry Beard ( born May 20, 1812 in Buffalo, † April 4, 1893 in Flushing, New York) was an American painter of animals.

He painted initially in Cincinnati portraits, including that of President John Quincy Adams and Zachary Taylor. In 1846 he went to New York, where he in 1872 a member of the Academy of Fine Arts and was initially employed with genre painting. Later he devoted himself to animal painting, gained herein great success and was even called "the American Landseer ". Examples of his work are the poor relatives (dog picture) The threat (1871 ) Mutual Friends (1875 ), Out of sight but not out of mind, Consultation (1877 ) and Don Quixote and Sancho Panza ( 1878). At the exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876 his famous genre painting The lawyer and his client was issued.

He was a member of the National Academy of Design since 1848. James' brother William Beard was also a well-known animal painter.
