James Hillman

James Hillman ( born April 12, 1926 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, † October 27, 2011 in Thompson, Connecticut) was an American psychologist and author of numerous books on topics of depth psychology.

Life

Hillman came in 1946 as a member of the United States Army to Frankfurt am Main, where he was employed in the service of the U.S. occupying power as a news editor. He then studied at the Sorbonne in Paris and at Trinity College Dublin until he moved for a year to India.

From 1953 he continued his studies at the University of Zurich, where he received his doctorate in 1959. At the same time he completed psychoanalytic training at the CG Jung Institute, where he worked until 1969 as the first Director of Studies. From 1966 he was a lecturer also at the annual Eranos conferences. In 1970 he became editor of Spring Publications, a Series of Analytical Psychology, as well as the trade journal Spring.

1978 Hillman moved back to the USA: in Dallas in 1980, he founded the Dallas Institute for Humanities and Culture. He lived as a freelance writer in Connecticut.
