James Sant

James Sant (* April 23, 1820 in Croydon, † July 12, 1916 in London) was a British painter.

Life

James Sant studied with John Varley and August Calcott. In 1840 he exhibited at the Royal Academy, in 1870 he was elected member of the Academy. He specialized in portraiture and genre painting and was court painter to Queen Victoria in 1872. His style struck the contemporary taste; In 1889 he was awarded a bronze medal at the World Exhibition in Paris. In his later years, as his portraits began something to go out of fashion, he also painted numerous landscapes.

Aside from its 72 years lasting exhibition activities at the Royal Academy he also exhibited a total of 39 paintings at the Walker Art Gallery during the Liverpool Autumn Exhibitions. 24 of his paintings were exhibited 1847-1864 at the Liverpool Academy.

Sants works are in museums in Glasgow, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Preston, Rochdale and Sydney. With his wife Elizabeth or Eliza, née Thomson, he got at least one daughter.
