James Spratt (Royal Navy officer)

James Spratt ( May 3, 1771 in Harrell 's Cross, County Dublin, † 1853) was a Royal Navy officer and was known as a hero of the Battle of Trafalgar.

Commander James Spratt became famous when he appeared alone on the HMS Defiance to the French warship Aigle. He climbed through a rear window, went to the poop deck and threw himself on the team - man against hundreds. In the scuffle he killed two sailors and the fight against a third party, both falling from the poop deck on the main deck; while his opponent died, he suffered severe injuries. He was finally rescued from the awkward position by the engagement of the crew of Defiance, but his bravery hurt his future career.

On April 4, 1809, he married Jane Brimage ( born April 2, 1790), their eldest son was Thomas Abel Brimage Spratt, who was born on May 11, 1811.
