James T. Bates

James T. Bates ( born September 29, 1844 in Boston, Massachusetts, † December 24, 1914 in Geneva) was an American businessman. He was the founder of the daily newspaper Tribune de Genève and the Union Bank, which in 1920 was acquired by Swiss Bank Corporation, now UBS.

Bates was born the son of a shipowner. At age 17 he joined the Union Army, with 21 years, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel. In New York, he eventually became a stockbroker. Two years after his marriage to Amélie Chenevière in 1873 he moved to their home city of Geneva. Later Bates Henriette married Baron. Since 1878 he was an active member of Emmanuel Church, an American church in Geneva.
