James Welch (writer)

James Welch ( born November 18, 1940 in Browning, Montana; † August 4, 2003 in Missoula, Montana ) was an Indian- American writer.

Life

The father of James Welch was a member of the tribe of the Blackfoot, his mother said the Gros Ventre Indians. Welch grew up in Blackfoot and Fort Belknap Reservation. He studied at the University of Minnesota and at the University of Montana - Missoula at Richard Hugo. He graduated in 1964 with the bachelor's degree, and set it after that in the University of Montana Masters program continues.

Work

In his poems and novels Welch discusses the conflicts with contemporary American culture and the attempts to regain Indian identity by anchoring in the tribal and family history.
