Jan August Vitásek

January Matyas Nepomuk August Vitásek ' ( German: Johann Nepomuk August Wittassek; born February 20, 1770 in Hořín Mělníka; † December 7, 1839 in Prague) was a Bohemian composer and pianist.

Life

After his first musical instruction from his father, he studied composition in Prague in 1786 and worked there after as a composer and respected pianist. On 1 April 1814 took the position of Director of Music at St. Veit and was still active as a director of the Prague Organ School. His reputation spread to Vienna, but he refused the position of Director of Music at St. Stephen's from there. The Society of Friends of Music in Vienna in 1837 appointed him an honorary member. He was at the beginning of the 19th century one of the leading figures in the musical life of Prague.

Works

He created orchestral works, concertos, chamber music, piano works, and many smaller compositions. In addition, there are also a number of his sacred music compositions before, including some fairs and Requiem. His style was simple and catchy.
