Jan de Baen

Jan de Baen (* March 20 1633 in Haarlem, † before March 8, 1702, probably in The Hague) was a Dutch portrait painter.

Life

Jan de Baen was a pupil of the painter Jacob Adriaensz. Backer. In parallel, he also copied on several works by Anthony van Dyck to study him. Through these studies, the English King Charles II took notice of de Baen and invited him to London.

Later de Baen returned to the Netherlands and settled in The Hague. He probably died there at the age of almost 69 years on March 8 1702nd

Through his portraits de Baen soon reached his artistic breakthrough. By the time he sat the most distinguished persons model, among other things, he also worked for the Great Elector Friedrich Wilhelm of Brandenburg, for he 1675 a portrait of his wife, the Electress Dorothea of Holstein- Glücksburg anfertigte.
