Jan Janssonius

Johann Janssonius (* 1588 in Arnhem, † 1664 in Amsterdam). , Actually January Janszoon, other spellings January Jansz, Joan, John, Ioannis, Io ( h) annem; Ianssonii or Ianßonium ) was a Dutch cartographer and publisher.

Janssonius also continued the publication of atlases of Mercator - Hondius. In 1612 he married the daughter of Elizabeth of Jodocus Hondius ( 1563-1612). Since Hondius was the owner of the printing plates by G. Mercator, they work together after Jodocus Hondius ' death with his sons, Jodocus II and Henricus, in new editions of the atlas of Mercator. 1633 was the publication of the second volume of the Atlas. This is often referred to as the Mercator-Hondius Janssonius. The most important work of Jan Janssonius is the Atlas Theatre du Monde, published in 1639 in three volumes. After the death of Jansson, the company was continued by his brother Waesberg. 1694 the printing plates of Janssonius by Peter Schenk (about 1660-1711 ) were acquired.
