Jan Johnson

Jan Eric Johnson ( born November 11, 1950 in Hammond ) is a retired American pole vaulter.

In 1971 he won at the Pan American Games in Cali with a height of 5.33 m ahead of his compatriot David Roberts. The greatest success of his career, Johnson celebrated but by winning the bronze medal at the 1972 Olympics in Munich. With a height of 5.35 m skipped he placed behind Wolfgang Nordwig (5.50 m) and Bob Seagren (5.40 m).

January Johnson is 1,80 m tall and weighed in his playing days 70 kg. After his retirement, he began working as a pole vault coach at the Skyjumper Vertical Sports Club in Atascadero. Among his most successful protégés include his daughter Chelsea, who won the silver medal at the World Athletics Championships in 2009, and Dean Starkey, bronze medalist of the World Championships in Athletics 1997.
