Jan Kotrč

January Kotrč ( born August 23, 1862 in Bielsko, † October 17, 1943 in Vlachovo Březí ) was a Czech chess player, chess composer and writer.

Tournaments

Behind January Kvicala he took a split second place with Karel Traxler in Prague in 1891 at the 3rd Congress of the Bohemian Chess Federation, shared 4th - 6th in Dresden in 1892 at the 7th Congress of the German Chess Federation of the main tournament A, won the Paul Lipke. He won a match victory against Josef Kvicala ( 3 -0 = 2) in Prague in 1893 and 8th place in Vienna 1899/1900 when Kolisch Memorial Tournament (winner Géza Maroczy was ).

Publicist

In 1884 was Kotrč Šach -Mat, the first Czech chess magazine, out and in 1896 together with his brother Karel Traxler České listy šachové. In 1882 he led a chess club, in the Jedličková coffee shop in Prague had his domicile. In 1899, the Národní listy Kotrč in the first chess corner in a Czech newspaper, and led them up to the year 1900.

Kotrč moved to Vienna in 1903 and worked there for the last four decades of his life as a newspaper editor. In the interwar period he published the Viennese workers chess newspaper, nowadays a bibliophile rarity.

Chess composition

January Kotrč was one of the leading Czech chess composer. He was a member of the Bohemian school.
