Jan Matsys

Jan Massys (also Matsys or Metsys ) (* 1509 in Antwerp, † October 8, 1575 in Antwerp ) was a Flemish painter of Mannerism, son of Elder Quentin Massys and probably trained by him. After the death of his father in 1530 he continues his studio and is received in 1532 as a master in the Guild of St. Luke. What happens next is unknown, Still comparisons suggest that he painted in Fontainebleau. In 1536 he is back in Antwerp and takes Frans van Tuylt on as a student. In 1538 he married Anna van Tuylt. 1543 he has a new student Frans de Witte. 1544, he was hospitalized heresy in exile.

From the Inquisition expelled from their homeland, he is taken to Genoa in 1550 to the court of the admiral of the emperor and ruler of Genoa, Andrea Doria. For six years he was the court painter. Family

In 1538 he married Anna van Tuylt and had with her five children, four girls and one son. His son Quentin was when Quentin Massys the Younger also a noted painter.
