Jan Parandowski

January Parandowski ( born May 11, 1895 in Lviv, † September 26, 1978 in Warsaw) was a Polish writer, essayist and literary translator.

Life

Parandowski visited the Jan Dlugosz High School in Lvov and studied from 1913 at the University of Lviv philosophy, classical philology, archeology and art history. Due to the war he had to interrupt his studies and studied starting from 1920 on, so that he gained a Master's degree in 1923. During his studies he worked for the Alfred Altenbergs Publishing and wrote for the magazine "Gazeta Poranna ", " Tygodnik Ilustrowany ", " WiadomoĹ Literackie " and " Tęcza ". 1924 to 1926 he toured Greece, France and Italy. In 1929 he moved to Warsaw, where he was first editor of the magazine " Pamiętnik Warszawski " was. In 1930 he became PEN Club member and was 1933-1978 head of club.

In 1937 the zloty Wawrzyn ( golden laurel wreath ) of Polish literature Polska Akademia Academy Literatury. After the outbreak of the Second World War he was active in the conspiratorial cultural life. During the Warsaw Uprising his entire literary archive burned with all the works not yet published. 1945 to 1950 he worked at the Catholic University of Lublin. In 1948 he organized the World Congress of Intellectuals in Breslau. In 1962 he became vice-president of International PEN In 1964 he signed the so-called letter 34 (list 34), a letter of protest Antoni Słonimskis about freedom of speech.

Work

Parandowskis literary focus was on the culture of antiquity. His debut was in 1913 with a literary- philosophical sketch Rousseau held, but his most famous work was Mitologia ( mythology ), a retelling of the classic Greek and Roman Mythology, published in 1924 for the first time.
