Jan Pronk

Pieter Johannes (Jan ) Pronk ( born March 16, 1940 in Scheveningen (The Hague) ) is a Dutch politician and diplomat. He was from June 2004 to July 2007 Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to Sudan.

Scientific career

Pronk joined in 1964 his studies in economics at the NEI (Nederlands Instituut Economische ), an Institute of Economics, Erasmus University Rotterdam, from. From 1965 to 1971 he held there and on SSI ( Institute of Social Studies - Institute of Social Studies ) in The Hague even lectures. Furthermore, he was from 1979 to 1980 professor at the SSI and took over in 1989 donated by Wiardi Beckman Foundation Den Uyl chair at the University of Amsterdam.

Political career

Netherlands

Three times from 1971 to 1973, from 1978 to 1980 and again from 1986 to 1989 was chairman of the Workers' Party Prank Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA ) in the " Second Chamber " of Parliament. In between, he was from 1973 to 1977 Minister for Development Cooperation in the government Joop den Uyl. 2002 him UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan appointed as Goodwill Ambassador for the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD ) in Johannesburg, where he moderates discussions on water, sanitation, environment and biodiversity. In March 2003, Pronk was appointed as the new Chairman of the Council for Cooperation in the field of water supply and sanitation ( WSSCC ), in December of that year he succeeded by Richard Jolly at the first Global WASH Forum in Dakar / Senegal.

On 18 June 2004, Kofi Annan appointed him to the UN Special Representative for Sudan.

Pronk was also treasurer of the Brandt Commission, Minister in the Mansholt Commission (1972-1973) and member of the editorial board of The International Spectator. Since 1 January 2008, he is Chairman of the Interkerkelijk Vredesberaad ( IKV), a Dutch interchurch peace movement.
