Jan van Ruysbroeck (architect)

Jan van Ruysbroeck (including Jan van den Berghe ) was a Flemish architect of the 15th century. His exact birth and death dates are unknown. His most famous work is the Belfry of the Town Hall of Brussels. The Town Hall is considered one of the masterpieces of medieval secular architecture. It was designed in 1402 by Jacob van Tienen. Ruysbroecks tower was added 1444-1463. Another of his masterpieces is the openwork spire of St. Gertrude's Church in Leuven ( completed 1453), which he built from natural stone without the use of a single fastening nail, and their intricate stone struts can see through the viewer through the tower.

Among his other works are:

  • The fountain in Our Lady 's Hospital in Oudenaarde (1443-1445)
  • A part of the St. Peter's Church in Anderlecht (1479-1485)
  • Probably the tower of St. Michel et Gudule Cathedral in Brussels (1470-1485)
