Janáček Theatre

The Janáček Theatre ( Divadlo Janáčkovo ) in Brno is a mainly of opera and ballet building dedicated, named after the composer Leoš Janáček, which opened in 1965.

The theater was the product of a lengthy, lasting since 1881 making process. Between 1913 and 1956 there were seven architectural competitions with a total of about 150 participants. The range of designs ranged from - initially 's preferred - historicist variations to projects in the spirit of minimalist modernism, functionalism and organic architecture. Numerous well-known Czech architects were involved, such as Jan Kotera, Bohuslav Fuchs and Jan Víšek.

The final product is an opera theater in the functionalist -classical style. It has 1,383 seats and is designed as a representative lodges theater. The famous Café Zeman Bohuslav Fuchs had to make way for the new theater, but was reconstructed in the mid- 1990s at a nearby location. The previously designated as Janáček Theatre former German city of Brno theater was renamed in 1965 Mahen Theatre.
