Jänner Rallye
The January rally (also Castrol January rally or IQ January rally ) is an automobile rally in the room Freistadt ( Upper Austria, Upper Austria ), which takes place at the beginning of January in the years of its implementation.
In the 1980s, was the January rally, with her former sponsor Castrol, a major national rally championship races in Austria and also scored for the European Rally Championship. Among other things, the Audi quattro 1981 had his first officially evaluated rally appearance in this competition. The winner was then called " landlord" Franz Wittmann. In 1984, Wittmann at "his" January even ex- World Rally Champion Björn Waldegård refer to second place, the equivalent Audi quattro moving along with his former Rallycross rivals and here only acting as co-pilot Franz Wurz through Upper Austria.
End of the 1980s the January rally was suspended due to protests of local environmentalists. After a break of over ten years, it was first held in 2001 again, now with a new sponsor ( IQ discount). This cooperation was dissolved at the start of the January 27 rally.
For 2010, the organizers of the rally respectively Mühlviertel had to cancel the event in November 2009, as the reason for the cancellation is not actionable editions were called by the authorities.
Since 2012, the January rally counts after a long break again for the European Rally Championship and next to the Austrian and the Czech Rally Championship.
