János Bolyai Mathematical Society

The Bolyai János Matematikai Társulat ( BJMT, Janos Bolyai Mathematical Society ) is named after Janos Bolyai, Hungarian Mathematical Society. It was founded in 1947 in Szeged and settled in 1949 with its headquarters in Budapest on. She has now (2006 ) about 2500 members.

Since 1956 the BJMT member of the IMU. Organized with the Hungarian Academy of Sciences ( MTA), the Hungarian National Mathematics Congresses, first 1950. Moreover, they organized special conferences (such as in 1952 in memory of Janos Bolyai ) and annual conferences on specific mathematical topics. It shall publish the conference proceedings to monographs and lectures and are two English periodicals ( periodicals Mathematica Hungarica since 1971 and Combinatorica since 1981) as well as several Hungarian Magazines: Mathematical Journal ( Matematikai Lapok, since 1950), Közepiskolai Matematikai Lapok ( Mathematical Journal for high schools ), both of which were already issued by the predecessor organization. Further, they are the Journal of Applied Mathematics ( Alkalmazott Matematikai Lapok ) and Abacus (for students ) out and from 1953 to 1990, a mathematics education magazine (A Matematika Tanitasa ).

The Company is the successor to the Mathematical and Physical Society founded in 1891 (MFT, Matematikai és Fisikai Társulat, from 1921 Lórand Eötvös Mathematical and Physical Society, ELMFT ). This was initiated by Loránd Eötvös from a regular meeting of physicists and mathematicians of the two then existing universities in Hungary, Budapest University of Technology and the University of Kolozsvár (today Cluj- Napoca in Romania). Its first president was Eötvös, Vice Minister Gyula king. The number of members was 400 in 1891 and it became a Mathematical and Physical Journal published ( Matematikai és Fizikai Lapok ), first Gusztáv Rados ( the first Secretary of the Society ), from 1914 by Lipót Fejér and from 1932 by Dénes König. In addition, the company organized in 1894 a mathematics and physics competition for high school students, later called Lorand Eötvös competition. More competitions were added, the Josef Kürschak competition for high school students, from 1949 Miklós Schweitzer Competition for students, and 1985 to 1999, Tamas Varga competition for students. With the founding in 1947 Frigyes Riesz, Gyula Szőkefalvi -Nagy and Lipot Fejer were honorary presidents.

In 1918 the king Prize was awarded to young mathematicians in memory of Gyula king. Other prizes include:

  • The Manó Beke price, which is awarded annually since 1950 to up to seven people for mathematics education,
  • The Géza Grünwald price, which is awarded annually since 1953 to up to four young scientists
  • Tibor Szele Medal, which is awarded annually since 1970 to school -building mathematician,
  • The Káto Rényi Price ( named after the mathematician who died in 1969, wife of Alfred Renyi ), which is awarded annually since 1973 to up to eight students,
  • Gyula Farkas of the prize, which is awarded annually since 1973 to young scientists
  • Price of Patai society, which is awarded every year since 1986 to young scientists.

President of the Society were Rédei Laszlo ( 1947-1949 ), György Alexits ( 1949-1963 ), Gyorgy Hajos ( 1963-1972 ), Laszlo Fejes Toth ( 1971-1975 ), Pal Turan (1975 /76), Janos Suranyi (1976 - 1980), Akos Csaszar ( 1980-1990 ), András Hajnal (1990-1996 ), Imre Csiszár ( 1996-2006). Currently ( 2009), Gyula OH Katona is president.
