Janusz A. Zajdel Award

The Janusz A. Zajdel Prize ( pl. Nagroda in. Janusz A. Zajdla ) is a Polish literary prize with which the literature of the genre of science fiction is honored. He is considered the most prestigious science-fiction literature prize of the state.

History

The prize is awarded since 1984, first under the name Sfinks. The first prize winner was Janusz A. Zajdel who got him for the SF novel Paradyzja. After the writer died on 19 July 1985, the award was named after him. Mostly, he is handed out by the Zajdels widow, Jadwiga Zajdel.

The well-known in Poland SF magazine Nowa Fantastyka, the newspaper publishers as well as some Życie Agencja Wydawnicza RUNA, Niezależna Oficyna Wydawnicza Nowa, Wydawnictwo MAG and Wydawnictwo Zysk i S- ka took over the patronage of the price. Since about 1998, he is mentioned more frequently in the mass media of the country.

Award

About the award is decided by a vote at the annual meeting of the SF fans POLCON. There are five nominated works, the work with the most votes will win the prize. If the option does not award gets the most votes, the price is not awarded in any given year. At each vote take part about 150 to 200 people.

In 1992, two categories have been introduced:

  • Novel - over 100 standardized pages with 1,800 characters,
  • Amendment - up to 100 pages.

In the years 2003 and 2004, the writer Marek Oramus, Tomasz Pacyński and Konrad T. Lewandowski and the editor of the SF magazine Science Fiction Robert J. Szmidt criticized the voting arrangements. Marek Oramus accused in an interview in 2003, the personal relations would play a major role as well in the selection of nominated works as well in the voting behavior of the electorate.
