Japetus Steenstrup

Iapetus Smith Steenstrup ( born March 8, 1813 in Vang, Norway, † June 20, 1897 in Copenhagen) was a Danish professor and scientist ( botanist, zoologist and prehistorians ). He taught from 1845 at the University of Copenhagen. His botanical author abbreviation is " Steenstr. ".

Life

Steenstrup discovered the alternation of generations in animals and presented important studies of peat moss and about the prehistoric inhabitants of Denmark.

Middle of the 19th century led Steenstrup the term Køkkenmøddinger as technical term for mostly stone-age Fund pile of remains of marine and Malakofauna one. This term has become a synonym of such sites in archeology shortly thereafter. Steenstrup dealt since 1837 with the middens on the Danish coast and started in 1848 a trade dispute with the archaeologist Jens Jacob Asmussen Worsaae about the nature of Køkkenmøddinger. In the movie " Bryggeren " ( original title; Denmark) Iapetus Steenstrup in six episodes (1996-1997) is represented as a naturalist. The Danish actor Robert Reinhold ( born June 3, 1963) played the lead role of Iapetus Steenstrup. He was the uncle of John Knud Vogelius Steenstrup.
