Jean-Antoine Carrel

Jean -Antoine Carrel ( baptized January 17, 1829 in Valtournenche, † August 26, 1890 at the Matterhorn ) was an Italian mountain guide. He became known by the first ascent of the Matterhorn on 17 July 1865 by the Italian side, and the first ascent of Chimborazo in 1880.

Ascent of the Matterhorn

Originally J.-A. had Carrel obliged to climb with Edward Whymper on 9 and 10 July 1865, the Matterhorn from the Swiss side. However Carrel for one year was already in the service of the Italian geologist and engineer Felice Giordano from Turin, who arrived at the time in Valtournenche. Carrel was therefore at a loss, but by bad weather could not take place with the planned Whymper ride, Carrel therefore decided a few days later to lead the company from Giordano. In the meantime, however Whymper had conquered with his group the Matterhorn via the Hörnligrat already.

Carrel was achieved together with Amé Gorret few days after Whymper on the Lion's Ridge the second ascent of the Matterhorn. A few years later, the brothers broke Carrel with Edward Whymper to a joint trip to South America to, in the course of them a considerable number of joint first ascents succeeded, among other things, the Chimborazo 1880.

On August 26, 1890 Carrel died on the Matterhorn from exhaustion after he had brought entrusted to him roped to safety. He had gone off on August 23, 1890, together with Carlo Leone Sinigaglia and Gorret of Giomein to climb the Matterhorn. The rope team had come together on the first day to the hut on the cravat, but a sudden fall in temperature held for days fixed at the cottage. Then they had to descend through deep snow. Carrel it still safe to bring down his companions to the flatter willow, where he died of exhaustion succeeded.

Carrel's fate has been filmed several times, including calling Fight for the Matterhorn (1928 ) after appearing in the same year historical novel of the same title by Carl Haensel and 1938 by Luis Trenker under the title The mountain of Nunzio Malasomma in the silent film.
