Jean Antoine Letronne

Jean Antoine Letronne (* January 25, 1787 in Paris, † December 14, 1848 ) was a French scholars of antiquity.

Life

Letronne father, a poor engraver, let him study art under the painter Jacques -Louis David. However, the literature interested him more and he began to study at the Collège de France. It is reported that he further trained there its already highly developed critical skills by corrected old translations of Greek authors and the results then compared with the latest and most recognized expenses.

From 1810 to 1812 he traveled to France, Switzerland and Italy. After his return to Paris he published a pamphlet entitled Essai sur la critique de topography Syracuse, which dealt with the interpretation of Thucydides. Two years later published his Recherches et Geographiques critiques about the Orbis Terrae De Mensura of Dicuil. 1815 assigned him the government to complete the translation begun by Gabriel de La Porte du Theil of Strabo. After a treatise On the measurement system of the ancient Egyptians written, he was taken in March 1816 in the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres.

More Promotions followed rapidly: in 1817 he was appointed director of the École des Chartes, 1829, Inspector General of the University, and in 1831 Professor of History at the College de France. This chair he exchanged in 1838 with the archeology and in 1840 succeeded Pierre -Claude Daunou as head of the National Archives.

The lunar crater Letronne was named after him.
