Life

Little is known about Jean Baptiste Mathey origin and childhood. About 1655 he was in Rome, where he was first formed in the vicinity of Claude Lorrain painter and probably also pursued architectural studies.

On Lorrain's recommendation, he joined in 1668 as a painter in the service of Königgrätzer Bishop Johann Friedrich von Waldstein, who was appointed in the same year, Grand Master of the Cross with the Red Star. After his appointment as Archbishop of Prague, followed him Mathey 1675 to Prague, where soon the Archbishop's Palace was built according to his plans at the Prague Castle. Construction began on August 17, 1675 and lasted until the end of 1679th The construction management was up to the builder Francesco Lurag.
