Troja Palace

The Troy ( Czech Zámek Troy, Trojský zámek or Letohrádek Troy ) Castle is located in Prague in the Czech Republic, in the northern district of Troy.

The Castle

Wenzel Adalbert Graf von Sternberg ( Václav Vojtěch ze Šternberka ) was from 1679 to 1685 in Troy a summer residence built in the Baroque style after designs by Jean Baptiste Mathey, presumably with earlier plans by Giovanni Domenico Orsi de Orsini were considered. Construction manager was Silvestro Carlone.

The castle stands on a man made terrace north of the Vltava River at the foot of up projecting Bohnice slopes and is embedded today between the Prague Zoo in the west, vineyards to the north ( it north then the Botanical Gardens of Prague ) and the two castle's gardens in the east and south.

It consists of several buildings: the central corps de logis with two stubby, aligned to the castle garden in the south side wings, outbuildings and stables to the north, orangeries on the south side of the garden. In particular, the garden -facing facade of the corps de logis with the upstream flight of stairs is one of the outstanding achievements of Baroque secular building in Bohemia. At the sculptural design of the staircase the Dresden sculptor George and Paul Heermann were involved.

The decoration of the castle with wall and ceiling paintings concerned mainly the Italians Francesco and Giovanni Marchetti and the Antwerp brothers Abraham and Isaac Godin, including the Apotheosis of the Habsburg dynasty in the central Great Hall.

Between the castle and Moldova, a small baroque palace garden is located on the French model with a large central fountain. In the east is also a baroque scale orchard, a labyrinth is located in the center at the intersection of Wegachsen.

In the castle of the 19th century Czech art and historical costumes will be issued from the collections of the Art Museum. Another exhibition shows old prints and maps from the Far East. Since 2011 a more permanent exhibition about the pioneers of modern Czech art titled " Akordy modernosti " ( " echoes of modernity " ) is set up.
