Jean Gratton

Jean Gratton ( born December 4, 1924 in Wendover, † 14 April 2011) was a Canadian clergyman and Roman Catholic Bishop of Mont- Laurier.

Life

Jean Gratton, second from a family of twelve children, studied theology at the Seminary of St. Thomas Aquinas in Ottawa, philosophy at the Angelicum in Rome and biblical exegesis at the University of Montreal. He received on 27 April 1952 in Wendover and was ordained a priest incardinated in the clergy of the Archdiocese of Ottawa. He was from 1952 to 1967 teacher at the Minor Seminary in Ottawa, later its director. He was co-director of the Diocesan Council for the Laity (1968-1970) and the Diocesan Council (1971 ), parish priest of Saint -Victor, Alfred ( 1970-1973 ), then Vicar General for the Archdiocese of Ottawa ( 1973-1975 ) and pastor of St. Charles Parish in Vanier ( 1975-1978 ).

Pope Paul VI. appointed him on 10 May 1978 Bishop of Mont- Laurier. The Archbishop of Ottawa, Joseph- Aurèle Plourde, donated to him on 29 June 1978, the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were Jean -Guy Hamelin, Bishop of Rouyn -Noranda and Joseph Louis André Ouellette, retired Bishop of Mont- Laurier.

Gratton Bishop has held numerous positions within the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Canada. He also served as president of the Episcopal Commission for Christian Education (1989-1993) and Chairman of the Committee for Communications (1990-1996) of the Assembly of Catholic Bishops in Quebec.

On September 8, 2001, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation age-related.
