Jean II d'Estrées

Jean II d' Estrées comte de Nanteuil -le- Haudouin called d' Estrées (* 1624, † March 9, 1707 in Paris), was Marshal and Admiral of France.

Jean came from the influential French aristocratic family of Estrées and was the son of Marshal François- Annibal d' Estrées. He served first under Turenne, but was taken prisoner, where he spent over ten years.

Appointed by the king in 1668 commander of the Seetruppen, he chastised the robbery States, commanded against Holland in 1672, the combined fleet of France and England and fought against the Dutch Admiral de Ruyter in the Solebay (→ Battle of Solebay, June 7, 1672).

In 1673 he prevented by his inaction the victory of the allied British in the naval battle before Texel. 1676 he wrested the Dutch Cayenne, conquered the island of Gorée and Tobago, 1681 Marshal, defeated the 1685 robbery States Tripoli and Tunis, and was in 1686 appointed viceroy of the American colonies. 1688 he chastised Algiers, fought in 1691 lucky against the English and was awarded the 1704 Government of Nantes.

He died on March 9, 1707 in Paris. His son was Victor- Marie d' Estrées, the Marshal in 1703.
