Jean Jouvenet

Jean -Baptiste Jouvenet (* 1644 in Rouen, † April 5, 1717 in Paris) was a French painter of classicism. He is one of the main representatives of religious painting in France.

Life

He was the most important representative of a resident of Rouen family of painters and sculptors. In 1661 he appeared in Paris in the studio of Charles Le Brun and was employed by him from at least 1669 in the facilities of several castles, such as the (Palais des Tuileries, the castle of Saint- Germain -en- Laye and Versailles).

From 1685 Jean Jouvenet created mainly paintings with religious subjects for churches and monasteries in Paris and in the provinces, but also several large mythological works for the Grand Trianon at Versailles, and the castles of Marly and Meudon.

The painter was 1694-1709 instrumental in the equipment of the Parliament of Rennes and the now somewhat misleadingly called Royal Chapel of Les Invalides Les Invalides in Paris and the chapel at Versailles. He also designed a number of cartons for Bildwirkereien, primarily for the Paris Gobelins tapestry factory.

A paralysis forced him to paint in his last years with his left hand. He died on April 5, 1717 in Paris and was buried there in the church of St- Sulpice de Paris.
