Jean Leclerc (theologian)

Jean Leclerc (also John Le Clerc, born March 19, 1657 Geneva, † January 8, 1736 in Amsterdam) was a Swiss theologian and philologist.

Leclerc sat down for a critical interpretation of the Bible one, so broke with Calvinism and was forced to leave Geneva. 1682 he went to London, but moved as early as next year on to Amsterdam, where he teaches at the College of Arminianism.

He put together three encyclopaedias

  • Bibliothèque historique et universal (1686-1693)
  • Bibliothèque choisie (1703-1713)
  • Bibliothèque ancienne et moderne (1714-1730)

Leclerc had many points of contact with John Locke, citing his works extensively in his encyclopedias.
