Jean-Marc Bosman

Jean -Marc Bosman ( born October 30, 1964 in Montegnée ) is a retired Belgian footballer.

He became internationally known with a lawsuit against the applicable restrictions in professional football for players at club changes, in the so-called " Bosman ruling " of the European Court two central pillars of the European transfer system that brought the collapse of 1995.

Bosman played until June 1990 at the RFC Liège in the Belgian first division. After a dispute with the club's management his salary was cut by 60 percent. Bosman wanted then go to the French second division USL Dunkerque. The RFC Liège put the transfer fee but banked $ 800,000 firm, who asked not to pay the French club. Thereupon the RFC Liege, Bosman refused to grant clearance for a change of club, which was the trigger for Bosmans action. In this case he was supported by Roger Dillemans, lawyer and former rector of the Catholic University of Leuven.

Bosman returned in January 1992 to Belgium. When he could not find a new club, he filed an application for unemployment benefits, which was denied. It was not until nine years after the trial started, he got 780,000 euro compensation for his early career end awarded.
