Life

Jean Honoré studied Catholic theology and received on 29 June 1943, the sacrament of Holy Orders. 1943/44, he was a chaplain in youth work. In a subsequent doctoral studies, he received his doctorate with a thesis on Cardinal John Henry Newman at the Institut Catholique de Paris to Dr. theol. He taught at the Collège Saint -Vincent in Rennes (1945 ) and Saint- Malo ( 1946-1947 ). From 1948 to 1958 he held a professor of dogmatic theology and catechesis on the Grand Seminary of Rennes. From 1958 to 1964 General Secretary of the National Commission for Religious Education and Director of the National Centre for Religious Education. He was a consultant in the Second Vatican Council and was involved in an age- appropriate education and adaptation to human realities. From 1964 to 1972 he was rector of the Catholic University in Angers.

Pope Paul VI. appointed him on October 24, 1972 Bishop of Évreux. He received his episcopal consecration of the Archbishop of Rennes, Paul Cardinal Gouyon. Co-consecrators were André Pailler, Archbishop of Rouen, and Henri -Louis -Marie macerate, Bishop of Angers. On 13 August 1981 he was appointed by Pope John Paul II appointed Archbishop of Tours. In 1981, he became Chairman of the Episcopal Commission for schools and universities. In 1983 he was appointed by John Paul II as a member of the Congregation for Catholic Education. Honoré in 1985 was elected President of the Supreme Council of Bishops (UCO - Conseil Supérieur des Evêques ) selected. Honoré was instrumental in the development of the new Catechism - involved - under the guidance of Cardinal Ratzinger. On 22 July 1997, Pope John Paul II accepted his pre- mounted resignation for reasons of age.

John Paul II took him on 21 February 2001 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria della Salute a Primavalle to the College of Cardinals. From 2001 to 2002 Jean-Honoré was chairman of the Commission of the Congregation of Bishops of France. At Conclave 2005, he took no further part because of the age limit.

In a condolence address to the acting bishop of Tours, Bernard- Nicolas Aubertin OCist, paid tribute to Pope Benedict XVI. Jean-Honoré for his contribution to the preparation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and as a loyal and selfless shepherd who took care of the preaching of the Gospel.

He has published several books. In 2007 he was appointed Commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
