Jean-Marie Pesez

Jean -Marie Pesez (* 1929, † 1998) was a French archaeologist and historian. He was interested in the rural population in the Middle Ages. He is regarded in France as a pioneer of a renewal of medieval archeology in the 1960s and 1970s, which also includes neighboring disciplines and the Annales school is near.

In 1958 he received his Agrégation as a historian, Directeur d' etudes was at the École pratique des hautes études, and from 1965 at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales, where he founded the Groupe d' archéologie médiévale ( GAM) 1965.

In cooperation with Polish scientists he studied archeology abandoned villages of the Middle Ages in Europe, and dug in France (including the village Dracy, Côte-d'Or department ) as well as in Sicily and Greece.

Other pioneers in his field were in France Michel de Boüard (1909-1989), founder of the Centre de recherches archéologiques médiévales in Caen, and the student of Georges Duby Gabrielle Demian d' Archimbaud that in the 1960s in Aix -en- Provence the Laboratoire d' archéologie médiévale founded.
