Jean-Pierre Cot

Jean- Pierre Cot ( born October 23, 1937 in Geneva ) is a French professor of international law and current judge of the International Tribunal.

Life

After his studies and doctorate in law at the Law Faculty of the Sorbonne, Cot was from 1966 professor at the Faculties of Law and Economics. In the same year he became a professor at the University of Amiens, where he taught until 1969. In 1969, he returned as Professor of Public Law and International Law back to the Sorbonne and taught there until 1998., In many cases Cot worked as a consultant to various governments before the International Court of Justice. In most cases, these cases involved border disputes and issues of territorial demarcation.

Cot was also active as a politician. He was from 1981 to 1982 French development minister and from 1983 to 1984 Member of the Board of UNESCO. After that, he was a member of the European Parliament, where until 1994 he was head of the Socialist Group in 1989. From 1997 to 1999 he was Vice- President of the Parliament.

He also served in the previous five cases as an ad hoc judge at the International Court in The Hague. He was nominated twice by Colombia and once each by Romania, Burkina Faso and Thailand. Since 1 October 2002 Cot Judge at the International Tribunal, to which he expected 2020 officiated by a re-election in June 2011.
